Easy File Shredder

Even though you delete a file you no longer need, it can be brought back with a data recovery tool. If you want to ensure this does not happen, if you want to securely delete the files you no longer need, you need a specialized application such as the WebMinds-developed Easy File Shredder. This application can shred files, can shred the files you’ve already deleted the old fashion way, and it can scan for deleted files and present you with a detailed report.

After you download a 13.88MB executable and run it, you will have no problems installing Easy File Shredder on a PC powered by anything from Windows 2000 up to Windows 7. A word of warning about the setup wizard that will help you get Easy File Shredder up and running: it will ask you to install the WebMinds toolbar, make Ask the default search provider, and make Ask.com the browser homepage and new tabs page.

On Easy File Shredder’s interface there are 4 big buttons; from their names you can immediately figure out what they’re for: Shred Deleted Files, Shred Files, Settings, and Scan for Deleted Files. In the upper right hand corner there are 4 buttons for the same functions. Click the small arrow in the bottom right hand side and you can get these buttons to move from the right to the left hand side.

After you launch Easy File Shredder, a popup will show up in the bottom right hand corner, telling you that “We have detected X recoverable files on your system”. These are files that you deleted, files that can be brought back with data recovery tools. From the prompt you can view the list of files or you can initiate the shredding process. Of course, you can manually launch a scan for recoverable files from Scan for Deleted Files menu. Once the scan completes, you will be presented with a list that includes the following: file name, file path, file size, date modified, and recoverable status.

There are two other things you can do with the Easy File Shredder application: you can select the files you want to securely delete and you can do so using one of several shredding algorithms, and you can wipe free space on the drive of your choice.
